About Me

John Cadiz
ARTIST'S STATEMENT I was born and raised in Trinidad. My French/Irish/Spanish ancestry, "white" skin with all its implied privileges, and a strict Catholic upbringing have perhaps afforded me a unique perspective. > I emigrated to Canada in 1977 and worked as a graphic designer to support myself. During a rather stressful period about twenty years ago I started to paint. From the beginning I set a couple conditions: a) I would be 100% Cadiz and not copy and: I would paint only for myself and not as a means to make money. I am mainly self taught and tend to use events in my past, religion, and (Trinidad) carnival as props or metaphors, some of which I put into paintings set in more recent times. Though I try not to be overly influenced by any particular artist I do admire works of such diverse people as Bruegel, Bosch, Vermeer, Constable, Rousseau, Monet, Klee,Kalo and R. Crumb.
